Manchester United 1 Zenit St.Petersburg 2

Zenit has done, they have become the 1st Russian team to ever lift the UEFA Super Cup. The UEFA Cup winners defeated European champions Manchester United last night in Monaco. Being a United fan, I have to say that I was really disappointed with the performance the players showed against Zenit. United has the brightest talents in Nani, Anderson, Rooney and Tevez. However, last night it almost seemed like United only fielded one player, Carlos Tevez. He was everywhere! Running at defenders, running after loose balls, defending and trying to create chances for his teammates. That is probably the only bonus United got out of the game. United dominated possession in the first half but all they did was pass, pass and pass. There were no real chances created. United had 60% of possession! However, just before half time, Zenit forward Pogrebniak headed in a simple goal to give Zenit a one goal lead. 

I thought Sir Alex would have screwed the team at half time but it only got worse. Zenit's record signing Danny took the ball and ran magnificently at the United defence. With no one looking to close him down, Danny struck the ball with power pass Van der Sar to extend their one goal lead. The United defence was completely asleep! This is very unlike of the defence that conceded the least goals in the league last season. Then in the 73rd min, Vidic provided United with a lifeline by scoring from close range. From then, United started playing their normal attacking football. Subsitutes Park and O'Shea came the closest to finding the net. Into time added, Scholes did the unthinkable! A cross was floated into the box from the right and Scholes "Maradona-ed" the ball into the net! I was shocked. A player of his calibre and experience should know better that that was a red card offense. With already one yellow, Scholes was sent off and United were left to battle with 10. Zenit held onto the ball well and won the Super Cup 2-1.
